Obituary

Leonard E. (Shiney) Kurpell, 81, of New Boston, PA, passed away Thursday, April 8th, at Lehigh Valley-Cedar Crest, Allentown, surrounded by family.

Lenny, as he was affectionately known, was born in New Boston on July 4, 1939, to the late Florence (Kurpell) and Nicholas Barna, Sr.

He was a parishioner at Saint Teresa of Calcutta Parish, Mahanoy City.

Served in the U.S. Navy between 1956 and 1960, his tour of duty was on the U.S.S. Thetis Bay and the U.S.S. Midway.

Graduated from Mahanoy Twp. High School, class of 1956, RCA Institute, New York City,1965, and Penn State University with a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Marketing, 1973.

Playing football in high-school, he continued his love of the game as an avid Penn State and Philadelphia Eagles football fan.

He worked as an insurance salesman for American Travelers in Warrington PA and Benefit Vision, Harrisburg.

Leonard was the husband of the late Alberta (Feudale) Kurpell who passed in 2010.

He is survived by his four children - Karen Yablonski and Gino of Coal Township PA; Ronald Novak and Debra of Hudson, FL; Tina Purcell and Norman of Trevorton PA: Donna Klischer and Charles of Kulpmont, PA.

Sixteen Grandchildren - Brenda Fodor; Paul Yurkiewicz; Brian and Bridget Yablonski; April and Ed Coburn; Christy Nola; Erika Varano; Tracey and Mike Zimmerman; Tiffany and Jason Malakoski; Mike and Tara Okronglis; Melissa Klischer; Charlie Klischer;

Seventeen Great-Grandchildren - Britni, Braxton, Nathan, Garrett, Rainer, Leaf, Alden, Breaylah, Alyssa, Kiera, Cody, Desirae, Aubree, Jace, MacKayla, Mya, Jonathan; Two Great-Great Grandchildren, - Ariyah and Carter.
Preceded in death by three Grandchildren - Robert Brian Yurkiewicz, Courtney Novak, and Heather Varano.

His brothers, sister and their spouses – Nicholas and Sharon Barna; Frank and Debra Barna; and Joseph and Patricia Paszek.

Nephews and nieces – Katherine Feijoo and Carlos; Stephen Barna; Theodore Medina, Jr.; Samantha Ford; and Zachary Barna.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Teresa of Calcutta Parish, Mahanoy City, PA, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 17, with Rev. Leo J. Maletz officiating.

Family and friends may call Saturday, 9 a.m., at Saint Teresa of Calcutta Parish, 614 West Mahanoy St., Mahanoy City, PA.

Interment at All Saints Cemetery, Elysburg, will be private.

The family requests that all gifts in memory of Lenny be made to Saint Teresa of Calcutta Parish, 614 West Mahanoy Street, Mahanoy City, PA 17948.
