Obituary

Josephine Martaus Givnin, 102, of Mountain Top, Formerly of Mahanoy City and New Boston Died peacefully Sunday evening at home.

Born September 1, 1912 in Mahanoy City, she was the daughter of the late John and Anna (Klocek) Martaus. She graduated from St. Casimir's Parochial School and attended Mahanoy City High School.

Mrs. Givnin had been a member of the St. Casimir's Church, Mahanoy City, the Rosary Society of the church, and served as president of the Polish Woman's Alliance Group 724, which she helped organize in 1936.

On September 1, 1936, she married Thomas J. Givnin and they later moved to Waterbury, Connecticut. While living in Waterbury, she was a parishioner of St. Margaret's Church where she was a member of the Rosary Society and served as its president. She also served as regent of the Daughters of Isabella. Following her retirement from the Timex corporation in 1975, she returned to New Boston.

While residing in this area, she was a member of the Golden age Club of Mahanoy City, the Mahanoy Area Senior Citizens, the Frackville Senior Citizens, and American Legion Post 398 Auxiliary of Frackville, and the Catholic Golden Age Club of Scranton.

Josephine was the guest of honor at a party at Genetti's in Hazleton to celebrate her 100th birthday party, and sent out personal hand-written thank you notes to all in attendance.

"Aunt Josephine" as she was affectionately known to family and friends, will be remembered for her kindness and generosity and for being well dressed and coordinating her jewelry with her attire. She loved to travel, dance the polka, play cards and visit casinos and spend time with friends. She was a "groupie" with the Jimmy Sturr Polka Band, traveling to various performances in Eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. She traveled with his group to Poland and was always greeted with a kiss from Jimmy.

Josephine attended Sunday Mass at St. Jude's Church, Mountain Top, until her recent illness.

Last member of her immediate family, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Helen (Joseph) Yankus, Ann (George) Logan, Elizabeth (John McClain and Patrick Maharg), Mary (Stephen) Honushefsky, a brother Ignatius Martin, all of Mahanoy City, and infants Casimir and Baby Mary. In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her son-in-law, Gary Haas, nieces and nephews.

Surviving are a daughter, Maureen Givnin-Haas, Mountaintop; a grandson, Christopher (Keoki) Haas, and his wife Jaci, Costa Mesa, Calif.; nieces, Patricia (McClain) Purcell-Brown, Hometown, Carol (Yankus) Katchur, Delaware, Tina (Honus) Gnall, Mahanoy City; a nephew, Jerry Honus, Mahanoy City; great-nieces and great-nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Parish Mahanoy City at 10 AM Saturday January 10. Friends may call from 9 AM at the church.
