John Walashunas, age 95 of 339 East South Street Mahanoy City, died at home Sunday evening July 11, 2010.
Born in Shenandoah, he was the son of the late Felix Walashunas and the former Tillie Katalinas.
John lived in Shenandoah and attended school there for several years before moving to Mahanoy City where he was graduated from Mahanoy City High School in 1933. John was a coal miner most of his life and had also worked on construction before he retired. He had also coached CYO basket ball for many years.
John is a member of St. Richard Roman Catholic Church in Barnesville.
In addition to his parents John was preceded in death by his wife the former Sophie Ciszek December 8, 2006. By his daughter Mary Anne Pinkey Jan. 15, 2002 and by three brothers, George and Leo Walashunas and Edward Walashunas who died as an infant, also by two grandchildren.
Surviving are daughters Jean Munn Mahanoy City, Kathleen Risley and her husband Bill, of Barnesville, and Nancy Richards Mahanoy City, and a sister Jean Seward of Rush Twp. Tamaqua.
There are five grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and adoptive grandchildren
Friends may call at St. Richard Church on Thursday from 10 AM until Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM. Interment will be in St. Casimir cemetery in Mahanoy City where a White Dove will be released in his memory.
