August 6, 1938 – December 31, 2017
James L. Hyland, 79, passed away in Shenandoah on New Year's Eve, 2017, following a visit by his family.
Jim, Jimmy, or "Flink", as his friends knew him, was born in the Locust Mountain Hospital in Shenandoah, and grew up in Mahanoy City. He graduated from Mahanoy City High School in 1956. He was handsome and athletic, and participated in varsity football (left tackle), baseball (center field), and track (shot put). Following high school, Jim joined the United States Army and stayed stateside in the slot between the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
He had several major employers during his life, including the Union Carbide Corporation, the Prudential Insurance Company, and the Bethlehem Steel Corporation.
Jim was preceded in death by his father, also James, his mother Blanche (Paul) Hyland, and his former spouse Dorothy (Palubinsky) Hyland. He is survived by two children: Shari Pick, of Sterling, Virginia, and James Hyland, of Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania. Also surviving is his loving fiancé and companion of nearly 40 years, Joanne Yotko of Shenandoah. He was blessed with eight grandchildren.
Jim enjoyed many pass-times including hunting, shooting, fishing, archery, and cooking. He was one of the original members of the 500 Fish and Game Club in Shenandoah.
Although often opinionated, he was a man of simple needs, and was kind, intelligent, and compassionate.
He will be missed dearly by all who knew him.
