Obituary

Genevieve "Genny" Marie (Sherpinsky) Sekela, 92, formerly of Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully with her sons by her side on Monday, December 5, 2022, at Jefferson-Torresdale Hospital in Philadelphia.

She was the widow of the late Michael "Mick" Sekela who passed in 1985.

Born in Mahanoy City on June 24, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Veronica (Melusky) and George Sherpinsky.  Both her parents emigrated from Lithuania and as a result, Genny was a proud Lithuanian American all her life.

She was a life-long member of Saint Teresa of Calcutta Parish (formerly St. Joseph's), Mahanoy City.

She attended the Mahanoy City 12th Street School, St Joseph's Grade School, and graduated from Mahanoy City High School with the class of 1948.

She had worked at Atlas Powder in Tamaqua and at City Shirt in Mahanoy City, before raising her sons. In her later years, she was a caregiver to those who needed her.

As a woman strongly devoted to her Catholic Faith, Genny was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and various organizations at her church, including the choir.

Genny enjoyed traveling including taking cruises with her son, Greg, trips to the casinos, visits to Walt Disney World with her grandchildren.  She also traveled to many different countries, including her 65 th birthday trip to Austria where she visited with her pen pal, Harald Hansluwka, whom she began writing to in her teenage years and continued to correspond with through the remainder of her life.  She also had the opportunity to attend the opening ceremonies of both the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, GA and the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah, as well as the closing ceremonies of the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain.  Genny also enjoyed many trips with her friends in the Mahanoy Area Seniors/Golden Agers.

Genny is survived by her two sons, Gregory Sekela, of Trevose, PA, with whom she resided in her later years and Shawn Sekela, husband of Ronda, of Douglassville, PA, her two grandsons, Jacob and Nathan, who lovingly referred to her as "Mam Mam", and long-time family friend James Jamieson.  She is also survived by many nieces and nephews throughout the country whom she loved dearly and kept in contact with frequently.

She was preceded in death by her brother, John Sherpinsky, and five sisters, Anna Blashock, Margaret Sebastian, Veronica Sherpinsky, Agatha Sherpinsky, and Helen Wasilefsky.

Friends and family may call on Tuesday, December 13 th from 6 to 9 PM and Wednesday, December 14 th at 9 AM at the Louis D. Truskowsky Funeral Home & Crematory Inc., 300 W. Centre Street, Mahanoy City, PA.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Church, 600 W. Mahanoy Street, Mahanoy City, PA, at 11AM on Wednesday, December 14th, with Rev. Kevin P. Gallagher and Rev. Martin Kern (life-long family friend) officiating.

Interment will follow in St Joseph Cemetery, Cemetery Road, Mahanoy City.
