Francis C. "Heinz" Whalen, 67, of Collegeville, died Wednesday at Lehigh Valley Hospital.
Born in Mahanoy City, Oct. 30, 1941, he was a son of the late Michael and Mary Kaier Whalen.
From his teenage years, he was a member of music groups playing rock 'n' roll, jazz and bluegrass.
He
played solo for residents in assisted-living and nursing homes
throughout the area. He played in the Travis Wetzel Trio bluegrass
band, the Razor's Edge and the Sidekicks from his hometown, Mahanoy
City.
He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, where he served
in the radar unit and was a member of the Jazz and Army marching bands.
He graduated from Penn State University with a bachelor's degree in engineering.
He was an engineering specialist and was employed at Lockheed-Martin, King of Prussia.
He was a member of St. Eleanor Church, Collegeville, where he served as church usher.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and James.
Surviving
are his wife, Dorothy Supernavage Whalen; three daughters, Suzanne
(Troy) Bindle, Havertown, Stephanie (Jesse) Hiser, Orange, Calif., and
Angela Whalen, Havertown; two granddaughters, Brianna and Kyra; a
sister, Kathleen Wufsus, Mahanoy City.
Mass of Christian Burial
will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Eleanor Church. Friends may
call from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Monday at the church. Interment will be
private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial
donations may be made in memory of Frank Whalen, Kutztown Music
Department, checks made payable to KU Foundation, P.O. Box 151,
Kutztown, PA 19530. Volpe Funeral Home Inc., Norristown, has charge.
