Betty Alsvan, 69, of Mahanoy City, PA, passed away on Wednesday, September 22, 2021, at the Carolyn's House Hospice Center in Harrisburg, PA after battling cancer at Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute, Hershey and Lehigh Valley Cedarcrest Hospital, Allentown. Prior to her illness, she lived in McAdoo at ANDSHER Personal Care Home.
Born in Manhattan, New York on January 5, 1952, Betty was the daughter of the late Cecelia (McCloskey) and Joseph Alsvan. Betty lived in New York City and attended St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School. Betty's family moved to Boston Run, PA when she was nine with her four sisters and two brothers. Betty attended mass at Saint Canicus and Saint Teresa of Calcutta Church in Mahanoy City. She graduated from Mahanoy Area High School in 1971 and lived most of her life in Mahanoy City.
Betty loved sitting outdoors and listening to music. She also loved spending time with her daughter, son, and grandchildren—Grace and Zachary. She liked going for pizza with her family. Her favorite vacation was to Disney World in Orlando, FL where she loved the parades. She was especially fond of the Christmas holiday.
Betty was preceded in death by her sister JoAnne Bobarsky of Mahanoy City and her grandson Zachary. She is survived by her sisters, Rosemary Alsvan, Shenandoah, Frances Scheitrum, Barnesville, and Patricia Alsvan, Mahanoy City, her brothers, John Alsvan and Thomas Alsvan, both from Mahanoy City; a daughter, Betty-Jo Bowers, Lancaster, and son Anthony Bowers, III, Mahanoy City and her former spouse, Anthony Bowers, Jr., Mahanoy City. Betty is also survived by granddaughter, Grace, Lancaster, and numerous nephews and nieces.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Teresa of Calcutta parish Saturday, October 2, at 10 AM with Father Kevin Gallagher officiating.
Friends and family may come starting at 9 AM for a viewing at the church.
Interment will follow in St. Canicus Cemetery.
