Anthony Jon (A.J.) Matalavage, 70, of Mahanoy City died Sunday afternoon at the St. Catherine Medical Center Ashland. A.J. was born in Mahanoy City, the son of the late Anthony Matalavage and the former Helen Parulas. He was graduated from Mahanoy City HS in 1958. And he received a BA from Kutztown Teacher's College in 1962. Tony lived most of his life in Mahanoy City and was a teacher at the Mahanoy Area School District. He last worked for Sayre Area School district, Sayre PA, from which he retired. Tony was a well known local artist, was involved in the production of many high school plays and always involved in the minstrels at the former St. Canicus Church. He was a member of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta parish Mahanoy City.

Tony was preceded in death by a sister Eleanore McGeary in 2006. He is survived an aunt Florence Yanall of Shenandoah, by two Nephews John McGeary and his wife Lisa of Catawissa PA and Daniel McGeary and his wife Crystal of Schuylkill Haven PA.

Friends are invited to attend a mass of Christian Burial on Friday June 24 at 10 am at Blessed Teresa of Calcutta church Mahanoy City. Interment will be in St. George Cemetery Shenandoah where a white dove will be released in his memory. There will be no other calling hours. His family prefers memorial donations to Blessed Teresa of Calcutta church.
